Build Stories That Stick

Master narrative techniques that transform how readers experience your writing

Look, most writing courses throw grammar rules at you and hope something sticks. We're taking a different path here. This program is about understanding how stories actually work—why some passages make you lean in while others make you drift away. You'll learn techniques used by writers who've figured out how to hold attention, create tension, and make readers care about what happens next.

Foundation Workshop

8 weeks

We start with the basics—but not the boring kind. This module breaks down how narrative structure actually functions in different contexts, from short fiction to long-form essays. You'll see how published authors use specific techniques to control pacing and build momentum.

  • Understanding narrative arcs beyond the three-act structure
  • Working with point of view to create intimacy or distance
  • Scene construction that keeps readers engaged
  • Character development through action rather than description

Dialogue & Voice

6 weeks

Bad dialogue sounds like a script. Good dialogue sounds like people talking. Great dialogue sounds like real conversation while doing ten other jobs at once. This module focuses on making your characters sound distinct and your narrative voice consistent.

  • Creating authentic speech patterns without phonetic spelling
  • Using subtext to add layers beneath surface conversations
  • Balancing dialogue with action and internal thought
  • Developing a recognizable narrative voice

Tension & Pacing

7 weeks

Here's where things get interesting. You'll learn how to manipulate time, build suspense even in quiet moments, and keep readers turning pages. We examine published works to see how professionals vary sentence length, control information flow, and create anticipation.

  • Creating stakes that feel genuine and urgent
  • Using withholding and revelation strategically
  • Varying rhythm to match emotional beats
  • Building toward climactic moments that satisfy

Revision Strategies

6 weeks

First drafts are supposed to be messy. This module teaches you how to step back from your work, identify what's actually on the page versus what's in your head, and make strategic changes that strengthen the whole piece. You'll develop an editing process that works for your writing style.

  • Identifying structural issues before line editing
  • Cutting unnecessary scenes and tightening prose
  • Strengthening weak openings and endings
  • Getting distance from your own work

How the Program Works

Students analyzing narrative structure in a workshop setting with text examples on display
1

Weekly Sessions

Each week focuses on a specific technique with examples from published work. You'll see how it functions in context, then try it yourself. Sessions run about ninety minutes and include discussion time.

2

Practice Exercises

Between sessions, you complete focused writing exercises designed to help you internalize the techniques. These aren't lengthy assignments—they're targeted practice that builds specific skills.

3

Peer Review

You'll share your work with a small group and receive feedback on how well you're applying the techniques. This helps you see your writing more objectively and learn from what others are doing.

4

Ongoing Support

Access to resources continues after the formal sessions end. You can review recorded sessions, use the writing exercises as practice tools, and stay connected with your peer group.

Teaching Approach

Our instructors have backgrounds in both creative writing and literary analysis. They've published their own work and spent years studying how effective narratives function. More importantly, they can explain these concepts in ways that actually make sense and give you actionable feedback on your writing.

Analysis-Based Learning

We examine published stories and essays to understand what makes them work. You'll learn to read like a writer, identifying specific techniques and understanding their effects on the reader.

Practical Application

Theory without practice doesn't help much. Every concept you learn gets applied immediately through writing exercises. You'll build a portfolio of work that demonstrates your growing command of narrative techniques.

What Makes This Program Different
